Biography

Marie DeForest focuses her practice on a wide range of areas involving complex commercial litigation, employment litigation, white collar criminal defense matters, legal malpractice matters, contract disputes, products liability law and mortgage foreclosures.

Representative Matters include the following:

  • Represented one of the oldest American company's in a multi-million dollar contract dispute which resulted in dismissal with prejudice of plaintiff's claim on the grounds that under Pennsylvania's Uniform Commercial Code, performance standards within the parties' agreement were not the only grounds for termination, and therefore the parties' contract was terminable at-will.
  • Member of team representing multi-million dollar technology company in products liability suit.
  • Assisted in representation of several attorneys in legal malpractice action involving a copyright dispute.
  • Member of team representing corporate officers in connection with a RICO action.
  • Assisted in representation of commercial lender in mortgage foreclosure litigation in New Jersey.
  • Member of team representing employer regarding sexual harassment issues.

While studying law at the University of Richmond, Marie served as Articles Editor to the University of Richmond’s Journal of Law & Technology. As Articles Editor, she reviewed numerous articles for publication involving a broad range of legal and technological issues including the patentability of human embryonic stem cells, how technology can affect law and the importance of metadata in e-discovery. Additionally, she served as an intern to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Office of the Attorney General, Employment Litigation Section. With the Office of the Attorney General, Marie helped represent numerous public entities, including several colleges and universities, regarding Title VII, Americans with Disabilities Act and workers’ compensation matters.

Marie is also an avid horsewoman and has traveled extensively throughout the United States to compete in three-day eventing competitions. She won the Mid-South CCI* three-day eventing competition in Lexington, Kentucky. She was awarded the United States Pony Club National Cavalry Award for winning an international eventing competition. Marie also received the United States Pony Club Harry T. Peters Award, which was awarded to the highest ranking eventing rider for excellence in riding and horsemanship at the United States Pony Club Nationals.
